Obama skips watching RNC Convention Kick-Off

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - President Obama didn't watch the kick-off to the Republican National Convention, but instead spent his time getting updates on the status of Tropical Storm Isaac, reading his briefings and watching sports.

The president was at his hotel in Ft. Collins, Colo., Tuesday night after a day of campaigning and was back in time to watch the speeches, but White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said he chose instead to work on his briefing books and reading material.
Carney said the president does take in a lot of news, but doesn't watch his news, preferring to read it instead. He's known to carry around his iPad too, and be electronically plugged in.
And when he does have the television on, which he can also watch aboard Air Force One, it's said to be typically on ESPN.
Tuesday night's convention kick-off in Tampa featured headline speeches by GOP nominee Mitt Romney's wife Ann, and also firey New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
The president will be back in D.C. for Wednesday's speech featuring vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis.
He's also expected to be at the White House Thursday, when his rival Mitt Romney makes his formal acceptance speech in Tampa.
