Vladimir
Klitschko has retained his WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight title belts, sending
challenger Tony Thompson to the canvas in the sixth round of the bout in the
Swiss city of Bern.
Klitschko first knocked the 40-year-old
American down with a big right near the end of the fifth round at Stade de
Suisse.
The Ukrainian pushed the tempo and dropped
Thompson again in the sixth, and referee Sam Williams had nothing left but to
stop the fight.
This was a rematch of the fighters’ 2008
bout, where Klitschko needed 11 rounds to stop Thompson.
The 36-year-old’s record has consequently
improved to 58 wins, including 51 KO's and 3 losses.
Thompson, who was the mandatory challenger
nominated by the IBF, fell to 36-3.
